UCM Chair

The Chair of Mindfulness and Cognitive Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid was created in 2018 under the government of Carlos Andradas. Its organ is made up of Fernando Maestu as Scientific Director, Prof. Agustín Moñivas co-director, Gustavo G. Diez as secretary and Vice-rectors Lucila Finkel and Ignacio Lizasoain as follow-up committee.

The main purpose of the Chair is the development of research in the field of cognitive sciences, mainly: neuroscience, psychology and artificial intelligence. The purpose of the Chair is to give support and sustainability to the activities related to the main lines of research that will be carried out within the framework of the Complutense University, particularly: organization of congresses, organization of conferences, seminars, as well as publication of articles and the technical support that involves the investigation.

Research as the main axis in the chair, has led us to design and finance an experiment in the Biomedical Technology Center of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Specifically, in the Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience laboratory, 25 brain recordings of magnetoencephalography have been performed with peripheral measures of cardiac, intestinal and respiratory activity to study the body's mechanisms of emotional regulation and attention in long-established meditators. The results, foreseen for the year 2019, will put the chair and Nirakara - Lab at the height of prestigious universities that devote effort to understand the biological mechanisms that underlie meditation, such as Harvard, Wisconsin, Brown, Stanford in the United States, or the Max Planck Institute, Bordeaux, and London in Europe, to name just a few.

During the academic year 2018-2019 the Chair is organizing two international conferences to be held in June and November 2019: Neurocience of mindfulness and Brain-Body interaction. These congresses will gather researchers from prestigious international universities to discuss the research that is being carried out and establish contact with national researchers.

Every month the Chair organizes scientific outreach meetings open to a general public to publicize the research carried out in different national and international centers. The planned collaborations include scientists from the Complutense and Autonomous universities of Madrid, the Goldsmith University of London, the European space agency (ESA), the European University of Madrid, among others.
